Revitalization of Panti Karya Building

Revitalization of Panti Karya Building
The Panti Karya building as the object of this research had the potentials to be considered for conservation. Its aging physicalcondition as of today could be described as inappropriate in reflection to its historical values. Therefore conservation acts shouldbe applied before demolition is unavoidable.

The conservation of a building is not merely about the physical condition of the object, but also affects it’s utility to generate humanactivities. A successful conservation means that the building subjected to it is physically preserved and gives it the ability to providea place for urban needs. Urban needs are varied from trading, tourism, commerce, transportation, and other usages. Theseaspects—whichever is chosen—are the prerequisites for conservation.

The revival of Panti Karya can be attained through revitalization acts considering Panti Karya’s location in Bandung’s commercialarea. By providing building performance utilities and by increasing the building’s economic abilities, Panti Karya would gain futurebenefits.

Being the first person whom gathered all historical facts related to Panti Karya, I believe that I’ve made quite a contribution to PantiKarya’s inclusion as a conserved building under the A category of Bandung’s historical building conservation act.Together with DR. Dibyo Hartono, IAI (the head of Bandung Heritage) I’ve sent a proposal for Panti Karya’s conservation to thelocal government. Finally, the topic lifted to be published in Pikiran Rakyat—a local major newspaper—on September 22, 2007
